Google Announces a New Algorithm Update

Remember the Penguin and Panda updates that had the whole Search Engine Optimization (SEO) community buzzing? Well, Google has done it again, releasing a new search algorithm update, the Hummingbird. Google announced this update as a part of their 15th birthday celebration where they also made other announcements like an update to Google’s Knowledge Graph and new Push Notifications for Google Now on iOS.

Google has said that this update is the most significant overhaul to their engine ever since the Caffeine update in 2009. They also explained that it would affect around 90% of searches. The main focus of this update seems to be that the new algorithm allows Google to more effectively identify and rank the answers to full questions as opposed to word-by-word search queries.

Google has been relatively secretive about how their updates affect search results, but as SEO professionals, we are able to analyze the aftermath and help to maintain rankings.
